I’ve been a boater all my life. My parents would always say I was “born on a boat.” In fact, they owned a 30 ft Chris Craft the year of my birth. I then had experience on their 40 ft, 50 ft, their 57ft and finally their 38 ft Chris Craft boats they eventually owned throughout my life. I spent a month or two cruising with them every summer up until only 10 years ago when they regrettably got out of boating. As my dad’s “navigator,” I would sit right next to him for hours, of course I also took the helm. We cruised to all of the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay except Ontario. We even ventured over to Isle Royal National Park in Lake Superior in fog so thick we could not see the bow of the boat. Besides taking 2 boating classes, I have learned a tremendous amount about boating the Great Lakes through hands-on experience and through my heavy involvement as a member of the Great Lakes Cruising Club since I was 14 years old. I know boaters throughout the Great Lakes and beyond who are very dear friends on mine because of boating.
Being near or on the water is my greatest passion. My husband Jerry and I own a 27’ Four Winns that we dock at the Club. We live along the Kawkawlin River and could also keep our boat at our dock in front of our house. We can trailer our boat along the highway far and wide to experience cruising different parts of the Great Lakes with less time and money. It is very hard for my husband to get away however, as he is a builder who owns his own company, JL Skrocki Builders. I’ve always known him to be a very hard worker. I started dating him when I was 17 so sometimes we actually act like brother and sister…we basically grew up together!
Professionally, I have a BA from Michigan State University in Travel and Tourism Management, through the Business College. When out of college, I went to Beadle Bay Marina and promoted this 600 acre project consisting of 180 marina slips, campground and waterfront home sites working directly with the developer, George Beadle. I also worked for the State of Michigan promoting our Great Lakes state until I started a real estate company in Bay City at the age of 29. Waters EDGE Realty was open for 14 years until I retired with owning storage units, my commercial office building, Quebec St. Lawrence Seaway waterfront property and rental homes that I now use as income.
I have been coming to SBYC consistly since 1972, when my parents Norman and Gloria Moore joined. I joined under my own membership in 1994. The club has always been a big part of my life. Every December as a young girl here, I sat on Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus’s lap. I then brought my daughter and now she brings her baby here to sit on Santa’s lap. The memories go very deep at the Club for me and my entire family. What is most appealing to me is the Club’s heritage and ceremonial traditions. I’m proud that our club is the second oldest club in Michigan, behind only to the Detroit YC. I joined to continue my memories here and pass traditions down to my family. I want the SBYC to always exist. This new web site was my project for the SBYC. I believe it is a good representation of our Club and will attract new members who want to experience our fantastic real estate along the Saginaw River. Our Club survived through 22 presidents, world wars, depressions, and much more! I’m so thankful and proud to be a part of this club.
