House and Ground Rules

The scope of these rules applies to the Club House and Grounds of the Saginaw Bay Yacht Club.
The House and Grounds committees of SBYC are responsible for maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for our members. The Vice Commodore serves as the chairman of the House Committee and the chairman of the Grounds Committee is named by the Commodore.
The General Manager is responsible to the Board of Directors for the efficient operation of the Club and its facilities. Members are requested to always cooperate with the General Manager.
Members having suggestions or concerns regarding the Club House and/or grounds are requested to direct them to the General Manager or the House Committee Chairman.
General Conduct
- Membership at the Saginaw Bay Yacht Club is an honor and a privilege. All members agree to always conduct themselves in a responsible manner at Club sponsored events both on and off Club grounds.
- Members may be requested by staff to show their membership card at any time.
- Members are responsible for their children and their conduct. Behavior should be considerate of other members while in the Club House and on the Club premises.
- Property of the Club and members is to be respected.
- Members shall not use the property of another without the other member’s permission.
- Articles of property shall not be placed in or removed from the Club house without permission of the General Manager or House Committee Chairman.
- All property brought on the Club premises by a member or guest shall be at the owner’s risk.
- No subscription paper shall be circulated, nor article exhibited for sale in the Club House or premise without permission of the General Manager or House Committee.
- The cost to repair or replace any damage, loss, or destruction (“damage”) to SBYC property or any property located on SBYC premises shall be paid by the member who caused, or whose property caused, said Damage regardless of the cause was intentional or accidental. The cost to repair or replace said Damage shall be determined by the Board of Directors. Unless other payment arrangements have been agreed to by the Board of Directors, payment for the Damage is due within ten (10) days after written notice to the responsible member.
- Appropriate attire is required in the Club House.
Club House
- Club rules require that shoes be worn in the Club House at all times.
- Dogs will not be allowed in the Club unless the dog has been identified as a service dog under Title 2 and 3 of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Books, periodicals, trophies, works of art, merchandise or other items may be placed in the Club House or on the premises with permission of the House Committee, who will determine where they shall be placed.
- No outside food or beverages will be allowed in any area where food and/or beverage service is being provided without the approval of the General Manager.
- With regard to the Club Bar:
- Only members and their guests may purchase alcoholic beverages
- No one under legal age can purchase alcoholic beverages
- Children under the age of 21 cannot be seated at the bar
- No alcoholic beverages will be sold after 2:00AM, and the premise must be empty and building closed by 2:30AM.
- Michigan law prohibits the sale of any alcoholic beverages from 11:59PM on Christmas Eve until 12:00 PM, on Christmas Day
- With regard to dining:
- Appropriate attire is required in the Club.
- State law requires that there be no smoking, in food service and food preparation area, work areas and offices. The House Committee and Board of Directors will apply current state laws when designating as smoke free the Club House, patio, bath house, maintenance building and grounds adjacent to the Club House.
- Additionally, SBYC will prohibit use of e-cigarettes in the designated no smoking areas.
- With regard to the bulletin board:
- The bulletin board, which is in the Club House, is for the primary purpose of posting such notices as may be required by the By-Laws, House and Ground or Dock rules, or otherwise ordered by the Board of Directors or it’s committees.
- All other notices and advertisements may be posted only after approval of the General Manager or the House Committee. Refer to posting guidelines on the bulletin board.
Grounds
- No dinghies, prams, water hoses, dock boxes, etc. will be stored on lawns adjacent to the slips.
- All dogs or other pets must be kept on a leash when off the boat and shall be the owner’s full responsibility for all actions at all times, including clean-up.
- Picnic Tables – All picnic tables are required to have two (2) runners attached to the legs of the table to facilitate movement by the grounds by crew. Member name and number must be affixed to the underside of one seat board for identification.
- All crew members of racing sailboats, who are not members of SBYC, must park their vehicles in the area located at the southeast end of the club property adjacent to the fence.
- To prevent accidents, games should not be played on docks, in parking areas, on roadways, or along the seawalls.
- Use of the grounds for games and entertainment will be at the discretion of the General Manager.
Guests
- A member must be present with his/her guest and is responsible for their conduct as well as financially. A member is not required to be with their “designated significant other” as described in the By-Laws.
- Misconduct on the part of any guest shall be the responsibility of the hosting member, relative to actions and/or damages. Additionally, the Board of Directors, at its discretion, may prohibit the guest from some or all future activities on Club premises
- Visiting yachtsmen and members of reciprocal clubs shall be allowed the privileges of the Club House after registering with the General Manager or the House Chairman.
- A guest may make payment for services via credit card, personal check, or cash. In the absence of this payment or bank rejection of the personal check or credit charges, the hosting member’s account will be debited for the charges
Special Events
- From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, member-sponsored private events may be scheduled with the General Manager who will ensure that the membership has adequate access to use the Club.
- Member sponsored private events involving more than 25 non SBYC members and making use of the Club House or Grounds, must be authorized by the General Manager in consultation with the House Committee Chairman. It is assumed that such events will make use of Club bar and/or food service. Should that not be the case, a fee will be charged as determined by the General Manager and House Committee Chairman.
Fiscal Responsibility
- Members may request a copy of the receipts for bar and dining expenses at the time they are incurred, and which will be charged to their account and billed monthly.
- A service charge is automatically included on the bill. Additional gratuity is at the discretion of the member or guest and is neither required not expected. If the member or their guest wishes to provide an additional gratuity, it may be added to their bill or provided in cash
- A member or guest may make payment for services via credit card, personal check, or cash. In the absence of this payment or bank rejection of the personal check or credit charges, the member’s account will be debited for the charges.
- The member is financially responsible for his/her entire family, including “designated significant other.” If a member wishes to curtail credit to any family member, a letter authorizing this curtailment must be represented to the General Manager.
- Each member shall receive a monthly notice of indebtedness by email to those with e-mail addresses on file with the Club or US Mail for those that do not, as soon as possible after the first of each month.
- The Treasurer will receive a monthly report of accounts with an unpaid balance after sixty (60) days. These accounts will be charged a delinquency charge $25 per month. The member shall be notified by the Club via email for those who have addresses on file or US Mail for those who do not, that full payment of the total balance owing must be made by the end of the current month to avoid suspension. After ninety (90) days the Treasurer will report such delinquencies to the BOD who will consider suspension of some or all Club privileges if payment in full is not received within 30 days. At that time, a certified letter shall be sent to the member from the Club notifying the member of the terms of such suspension and specifying that full payment by the next Board meeting, or within thirty (30) days if there is not scheduled Board meeting that month, is required to prevent expulsion. After a maximum of one hundred twenty (120) days with an unpaid balance, the Board of Directors may expel the member and the member so notified by the Club. The balance owing will be referred to a collection agency or small claims court.
Miscellaneous
The General Manager is required to notify members of any violation of the By-Laws, House & Ground Rules, and report such violation to the House Committee Chairman and Board of Directors.
The foregoing House and Ground Rules may be altered, amended, suspended, or repealed at any duly constituted meeting of the Board of Directors.
